American standard gate valves are commonly used to isolate process media in petrochemical, power generation, and industrial piping systems. They open and close the flow passage by raising and lowering a gate. Proper selection and operation are essential to maintaining sealing performance and reliable service.
An American standard gate valve mainly consists of a body, bonnet, gate, stem, seats, and operating mechanism. “American standard” refers primarily to the applicable requirements for design, dimensions, and inspection. The basic operating principle remains the same: the operating mechanism moves the gate perpendicular to the direction of flow.
In a typical manually operated design, turning the handwheel drives a threaded stem-and-nut mechanism that raises or lowers the gate. During opening, the gate gradually moves away from the seating area. When fully open, the flow passage is largely unobstructed, allowing the medium to pass with relatively low flow resistance.
During closing, the mechanism lowers the gate until its sealing surfaces contact the valve seats, forming a seal that blocks flow. In a common wedge-type design, the wedge-shaped gate develops a seating force as it closes. Actual sealing performance also depends on sealing-surface machining quality, materials, contaminants in the medium, and operating conditions.
American standard gate valves are generally intended for fully open or fully closed service. They should not remain partially open for prolonged throttling, as this may cause sealing-surface erosion, gate vibration, or abnormal wear.
When purchasing and using these valves, businesses should verify product specifications against the medium, temperature, pressure, and connection dimensions, and follow the manufacturer’s operating and maintenance instructions. If difficult operation or leakage occurs, the cause should be investigated promptly. Applying excessive force to close the valve should be avoided to support reliable piping system operation.
